Jadon is fifteen years old, full of adventure, trouble, and missing memories of his childhood. He doesn't remember anything before he started traveling around the world six years ago on the high tech, trade ship, Taryn. Argo, his guardian, insists he's just blocking out the past after his parents' death. Even so, he's quite sure that's not it. He doesn't even know how they died.
Suddenly, on a day in port, a bright light forms when Jadon evades a man. He can't explain it, but his friend, Abigail, sees it too. This makes him even more determined to look for clues about himself and his past. With the help of his young comrades, he learns he's supposed to be dead, and while the image of red toothed man swarms through his mind, he discovers pirates are scared of him.
Then, someone Jadon thought he would never see again, tells him he made a heart wrenching choice involving magical powers he possesses. Will he ever learn what that choice was? Or what those powers are?

Amazon just reminded me that I haven't written a review for this book yet. I was going to wait until I read the sequel before I wrote a review, but that isn't fair to this stand alone book. I will be honest and say that one reason I haven't read the second book yet is because I would have to pay for it. Now don't get me wrong, I think it is probably worth paying the $3 dollars to read it. I have every intention of buying it eventually; I just haven't gotten around to it yet.This first book was quite good. I hardly ever give 5 stars, but I truly liked this story; and I can't think of anything that would make it better. Also, I was not disappointed by it in any way, that is not usual for me, hence the 5 stars.
It has a slight steampunk feel to it, even though the story takes place in space and does not have a lot of steam powered gadgets, so I don't think you could put it on the steampunk shelf. Yet it does have a sort of steampunk kind of atmosphere. Overall, I was quite impressed by this book, even though it is not my usual genre of historical romance.

Loved the book. Although it is written I think primarily for kids/teens I had to keep reading it to see what Jadon would get into next and if he would find the answers he was looking for about his past. Looking forward to the next book this author writes.
This book became one of my favorites right after I read it. It has an interesting main character with a dark past full of intrigue, characters the reader will love, characters the reader will love to hate, a thick plot line, and an ending that will tie up all of the loose ends. In some stories, the loose ends might not always be tied up, but what makes this book amazing is that all of the loose ends are tied up in the end. Even though this book is aimed at the young adult age group, anyone can read this book. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes a suspenseful story that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
This was a great book, at times I did not want to put it down. Thank you letting me escape into a different world for a while
This book took a bit to get into but I kept on and after the 2nd or 3rd chapter I couldn't put it down. A great book.
This is great for kids and adults.
The story and characters have been developed precisely for the younger reader. The author has created an excellent foundation for the development of future story lines and characters.
Jadon is brave and bold, trying to survive life on the rough seas without his parents and with the responsibility of his little brother. He is trying to work out the secrets to his past to better understand himself and to feel complete.
This book is full of adventure, suspense, romance, surprise twists, and introspection. Although primarily geared toward a young audience, the book appealed to me - an adult - and I found it well-written and compelling.
